Dear Arts Lover,

THIS IS AN APPEAL FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF PERISHABLE, RI’S RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT THEATRE. YOUR DONATION OF $100, $50, $25 OR EVEN $10 KEEPS OUR TICKETS AND CLASSES AFFORDABLE AND HELPS THE NEXT WAVE OF ARTISTS MAKE THAT LEAP TO WIDESPREAD SUCCESS. Please make your donation or pledge by June 30, 2008.

In the 2008-2009 season, Perishable Theatre will celebrate its 25th birthday. This quarter century mark begs reflection on where the theatre started and certainly begs the question where will we go from here? From its beginnings as an initiative to employ young actors and bring the power of live theatre to children throughout the region, Perishable has grown more youthful than ever as RI’s Research & Development theatre, aiming to connect RI audiences with groundbreaking works of theatre that are innovative in form and content. The spirit of experimentation lives within our programming, whether it is through our produced and presented theatre pieces, including the International Women’s Playwriting Festival or through our Theatre Arts School, providing first-rate theatre classes to teens and adults. At Perishable, we live at the intersection of art and social change, incubating theatre works and theatre artists who take their inspiration from the world around them.

The artists who are developing pieces through the Resident Artists at Perishable Theatre (RAPT) program are only the latest in a long line of socially-committed and notable artists. Playwright Lisa D’Amour (The Cataract 2005), received the prestigious Alpert Award in theatre for being wildly independent, socially engaged, and incredibly talented. Playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes (Holy Broth-Women’s Playwriting Festival 2003) is garnering rave reviews on Broadway for In the Heights, a new musical for which she wrote the book. Actor Masi Oka (Some Asians- Women’s Playwriting Festival 1997) has been taking the world by
storm as Hiro in the NBC series Heroes. The list of our prestigious alumni has grown over 25 years- because Perishable has been an important part of these artists’ growth.

Thank you for our supporting our work. You will be rewarded many times over. And so will we.

Sincerely,
Vanessa Gilbert

Artistic Director
